Line-up for SUN 31 DEC: SUNDAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS (and Daily Mass Feasts starting Tue 26 Dec)

Before getting to upcoming music, let me first thank all those who showed up back-to-back for Midnight Mass and 10am Christmas. Both went very well, I think; I was especially impressed with how good the Propers sounded with the organ and greater numbers. We and the 9am choir may have radically different musical tastes, but I think they are to be commended for stepping up and venturing into the wonderful world of the Church's rich treasury of Gregorian chant.

Practice as usual tomorrow night, 5:30pm Tuesday 26 December, mainly focusing on next Sunday, including the indulgenced Te Deum -- but before that there is 6:30am tomorrow morning, the Feast of St. Stephen the First Martyr [GDOC]. And the evening practice will include the 27th, St. John [GDOC], and the 28th, the Holy Innocents [GDOC]. However, in trying to nail down the correct Propers for the rest of the week, it seems that the Octave of Christmas is not of the same rank as the Octave of Easter. At this point I'm not even certain that those days -- Friday and Saturday -- which are not otherwise feasts, call for the Schola's appearance at 6:30 Mass. I will consult with the priests and plan accordingly. Whether those days are "chant days," the next Monday 01 January is -- the Octave Day of Christmas is also the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God [GDOC].

Final notes:
  1. As I mentioned, I'm giving us a break from the full Introits, at least for most Sundays.
  2. The Gloria is back each Sunday, for a few weeks at least (until Septuagesima).

LATE DECEMBER: Midnight Mass, Christmas Day, etc.

Upcoming practices and events:
  • TUE 19 DEC 5:30pm as usual: Practice with Roxanne, mainly Midnight Mass, but also a quick look at Christmas Day. Note that I have backed down the Propers for Christmas Day to the psalm-toned versions.
  • THU 21 DEC 6:30pm (if that changes I'll let you all know): Practice with the 09:00 choir. This is the BIG Midnight Mass practice. If you are planning to sing at Midnight Mass, PLEASE be there; if you can't be there, please let me know beforehand so that I will have an answer when asked.
  • SUN 24 DEC 11:15pm: Pre-Midnight Mass caroling begins. I'm sure we will discuss what time we need to be in the choir loft on Thursday night. My guess is, no later than 11pm. [line-up below]

Line-up for SUN 03 AND 10 DEC: FIRST AND SECOND SUNDAYS IN ADVENT (plus upcoming Daily Mass Feasts and some Christmas music)

Thank you all for stepping up during last night's Novus Ordo Christ the King Mass -- and thanks especially for Fr. John O'Brien from St. Anthony of Padua Church for stepping in for Fr. Blake with a wonderful "High" Novus Ordo celebration.

Chris Maples, M.C.;
Fr. John O'Brien;
and some other guy....
Following is the line-up for tomorrow night's practice, which will likely be long. Our practice next week (05 Dec) will be bumped by Lessons and Carols, and with the Holiday Crazy upon us I'm not counting on being able to get in a practice at all next week. I therefore plan to get through two week's worth of material ... and it's a big two weeks:

For Sun 03 Dec: FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Mass Setting for Advent-Christmas: Mass XII Pater Cuncta
For Sun 10 Dec: SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT
For both weeks
  • Hymn after Offertory: Veni, Veni, Emmanuel [PDF]
  • Hymn after Communion: Creator Alme Siderum [PDF -- Video] *
  • Postlude: Antiphona ad Michaelem Archangelum [PDF -- mp3]
Upcoming Daily Mass Feasts
  • Thu 30 Nov: St. Andrew [gdoc]
  • Fri 08 Dec: Immaculate Conception [gdoc] *
  • Tue 12 Dec: Our Lady of Guadalupe [gdoc]
    • Hymn to Our Lady of Guadalupe [PDF -- Video] *
For Christmas Midnight Mass
Yes. Really. The priority will be the starred items, but if we can get to any of the rest, that will be great. (I'll bring copies for everything new.)

Now, if I can just get rid of this cold that won't quite come, won't quite go....

Line-up for SUN 26 NOV: NOVUS ORDO CHRIST THE KING (plus the Advent Mass Setting and a new setting of Psalm 140 Incensum)

As you may have gathered Sunday night, Fr. Blake will be out of town this coming weekend. Fr. O'Brien from St. Anthony's will cover the 5pm Sunday Mass, which will be Novus Ordo. We therefore have a somewhat different music line-up than we had counted on. However, since the last Sunday in November per the New Calendar is the Feast of Christ the King, which we celebrated under the Old Calendar a few weeks ago on the last Sunday in October, our practice Tuesday night, 21 November, remains cancelled. Most importantly, the full Gregorian chant Introit for Christ the King turns out to be the same for TLM and Novus Ordo, so we just did it and should be able to handle it.

It would be good, however, if you take a few minutes and just look over the music -- for this coming Sunday, the Advent Mass Setting, and the new setting of Psalm 140 Incensum we looked at last week. We'll practice as usual on Tuesday 28 November, 5:30pm in the Basilica.

I will have copies of the Mass Propers and the hymn, Aeterne Rex Altissime when we assemble before Mass Sunday, but please bring your Mass VIII Mass Parts as well as the "old" setting of Psalm 140 Incensum we have been using.

Here is the line-up:

For Sun 26 Nov: Novus Ordo Christ the King
  • Mass Propers [PDF
  • Mass Parts: Mass VIII -- De Angelis
  • After Offertory: Psalm 140 Incensum (Mode 1) [PDF]
  • Hymn after Communion: Aeterne Rex Altissime [PDF]
    • Postlude: Antiphona ad Sanctum Michaelem [PDF -- mp3]
    Upcoming Daily Mass Feasts
    • Thu 30 Nov: St. Andrew [to be posted]
    • Fri 08 Dec: Immaculate Conception [to be posted]
    • Tue 12 Dec: Our Lady of Guadalupe [to be posted]
Mass Setting for Advent-Christmas: Mass XII Pater Cuncta

Line-up for SUN 19 NOV: 23rd-+1 SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (plus the Advent Mass Setting and a new setting of Psalm 140 Incensum)

See explanation for "23rd-+1" last week.

Practice 5:30pm Tuesday 14 November. We'll work on the Introit some more, keep brushing up on Mass XII and learning the Asperges, which current plans have beginning on the First Sunday of Advent. There are no Daily Mass Feasts until 30 Nov, but I have a new Mode 8 arrangement of the Psalm 140 Incensum that I'd like to try out. We'll also talk about whether we will practice next Tuesday during Thanksgiving week.

For Sun 19 Nov: 23rd-+1 Sunday
    • Mass Propers [PDF
    • Mass Parts: Mass VIII -- De Angelis
    • After Offertory: Psalm 140 Incensum [PDF]
    • After Communion: Languentibus in Purgatorio [PDF]
      • Postlude: Antiphona ad Sanctum Michaelem [PDF -- mp3]
      Upcoming Daily Mass Feasts
      • Thu 30 Nov: St. Andrew [to be posted]

      • Sun 26 Nov: 24th Sunday Introit [Same Propers as Above]

      Monday, November 06, 2017

Line-up for SUN 12 NOV: 23rd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (plus upcoming Daily Mass Feasts, a preview of the 23+nth Sunday's Introit -- and It's Time to Start Prepping for Advent)

Why "23+nth Sunday"? Because the number of Sundays after Pentecost are liturgically set at 24, yet in reality vary anywhere from 24 to 28, yet the last Sunday is always celebrated as the 24th, those in-between are supernumeraries. In practice, the Propers are repeats of the 23rd Sunday while other parts of the Mass are repeats from earlier in the liturgical year, from the period after Epiphany which varies in length inversely to that after Pentecost.

Before I get the practice line-up, I'd like to quote something I put up on Facebook: "I'd like to thank the members of the Schola in attendance Thursday night for the All Souls Day Vespers service and Blessing of the Graves. Especially I thank Roxanne for joining both with organ accompaniment as well as vocally and Tommy for supporting the congregations singing from downstairs. The overall effect was quite moving and well received by all. You all are the best." I mean that.

Practice 5:30pm Tuesday 07 November, back at the Basilica. The bad news is the Introit is rather complex; the good news is we get to use it for a couple of weeks. It's also time to start brushing up on Mass XII, as well as learning the Asperges, which current plans have beginning on the First Sunday of Advent. And Thursday is the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran. Probably another busy practice....

Practice 5:30pm Tuesday 31 October, at my house to avoid traffic and Halloween activities down town. This will be our last practice before the All Souls Day Vespers Service -- please come if you possibly can. We also have two Daily Mass Feast Days -- Wed 01 Nov All Saints and Thu 02 Nov All Souls -- as well as Sunday's line-up. A busy week....

Tuesday 17 October: THIS IS GOING TO BE A BIG PRACTICE. Please come if you possibly can. Here's the line-up for practice:
      • We will practice upstairs again.
      • Roxanne will be with us at practice and promptly at 5:30 pm we will jump right into the All Souls Day Vespers Service with the organ. Please be sure to bring your copy (PDF below)
      • Fr. Blake will be holding the second week of EMHC and Lector training in the Basilica starting at 6pm. My plan is for us to be finished practicing the All Souls Day Vespers with the organ by that point. From that point on, we will practice a capella, hopefully not disturbing the training below to badly (and vice versa).
      • We will quickly go through St. Luke for the next day, Wednesday 06:30 Mass, then work on the Propers for Sunday's TLM. Please pre-practice with the Video and/or mp3 linked below.
      That should be all.

Line-up for SUN 15 OCT: NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (plus ALL SOULS DAY VESPERS, upcoming Daily Mass Feasts, and a preview of the 20th Sunday's Introit)

Okay ... I think I've got this right now: Practice on this Tues 10 Oct is going to be short and intense again since Fr. Blake is holding EMHC and Lector training in the Basilica at 6pm. The same will be true for next week, the 17th, for which preview see below. Please, if at all possible, pre-practice each week the current Introit with the linked mp3 and video.

Here's the line-up for practice Tues 10th -- my plan is to hit the Propers for Sunday and work them -- mainly the Introit -- right up to 6pm. We will practice upstairs so that people assembling for the meeting downstairs will be less distracting while we're still practicing.

      • 02 Nov All Souls Day -- Vespers at 6pm (See immediately below regarding practice on the 17th)
With regard to practice on the 17th:

Father will be having a second session of EMHC and Lector training at 6pm on the 17th. Nevertheless, we will practice, again up in the choir loft. This is an especially important practice, because Roxanne Lane will join us to practice the Vespers chants and hymns for the upcoming All Souls Day service with organ accompaniment. She will likely not be able to be here on the 24th, and the only other practice before All Souls Day will be Halloween night, which with the activities planned for down town will not be a good night for getting to and from the Basilica for practice. We probably will practice that evening, but it will likely be at my house, possibly with Roxanne on a portable keyboard, and I would prefer we go through All Souls Vespers at least once with the organ before that. So please plan to attend practice that night, Tues 17th: My plan will be to practice Vespers with Roxanne on the organ first thing, hopefully getting through it by 6pm, then we can practice our regular a capella Sunday Mass Propers upstairs while Father's training proceeds downstairs.

Line-up for SUN 08 OCT: EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (plus upcoming Daily Mass Feasts and a preview of the 19th Sunday's Introit)

Practice on Tues 03 Oct is going to be short and intense again since Fr. Blake is holding EMHC and Lector training in the Basilica at 6pm. Please, if at all possible, pre-practice the Introit with the linked mp3 and video below.

Here's the line-up for practice -- my plan is to hit the Feasts of St. Francis (Wed) and Our Lady of the Rosary (Sat) really quick, then jump right to the Propers for Sunday and work them -- mainly the Introit -- right up to 6pm. We may practice upstairs so that people assembling for the meeting downstairs will be less distracting while we're still practicing.

Line-up for SUN 01 OCT: SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (plus Midnight Mass news, upcoming Daily Mass feasts, and preview of 18th Sunday's Introit)

A summary of the Midnight Mass Planning Meeting is at the end.

There is a Pastoral Council Meeting at 6pm Tuesday 26 September, so practice will have to be quick and efficient. Please, if at all possible, pre-practice the Introit with the linked mp3 and video below.

Here's the line-up for practice -- my plan is to hit the Feast of St. Michael really quick, then quickly through the new hymn, Te Gestientem Gaudiis (which I think we all remember well from last year), and finally the Propers for Sunday until I have to leave. That is a tall order, I know.

For Sun 01 Oct: Seventeenth Sunday

      Midnight Mass

The format will be much as last year. Pre-Mass caroling will be two selections by the Schola (I settled on Corde Natus ex Parentis and Resonet in Laudbus -- see right for both; I intend both of these to be a capella), two selections by the 9am Choir, two instrumentals, and three carols with everybody; what those are is to be determined. Finally, we will end with Cantique De Noel/O Holy Night in both French and English.

The Procession to the Creche will be Adeste Fideles, verse 1 in Latin then English. After the Blessing of the Creche, we will continue with Adeste Fideles, verse 2 in English, as the priests and the servers enter the Sanctuary.

The Mass Parts will be the normal "everyday" Latin Sanctus and Agnus Dei, with the Mortem Tuam Memorial Acclamation printed in the program for the evening so everyone will have it in front of them if Fr. Blake chooses to do it. We're used to not knowing what he's going to do until he introduces it in English or Latin....

The Introit when the priest reaches the altar and incenses it will be the same as last year (the Propers and Readings for Midnight Mass are the same every year) -- Dominus dixit ad me. The 9am Choir has it in modern notation and is indeed already working on it, so they will join in the choir parts. There will be organ accompaniment.

The Gloria is still a bit up in the air. The 9am Choir is learning a new Gloria besides the Andrews one they have done forever, but two out of three of us there in the meeting were for the 9am Choir learning the Mass VIII Latin Gloria, so they are going to give that a shot.

The Responsorial Psalm and the Gospel Acclamation will be the same as last year -- again, we'll just sing along with the melody for the latter.

Fr. Blake requested Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring for the Preparation of Gifts, so we will start learning the melody for that in the coming weeks.

The Communion Antiphon will also be the same as last year, In splendoribus, and yes, the 9am Choir is working on it as well and will join in, with organ accompaniment. Then there will be instrumental music as the Choir Communicates, after which we will all sing Of the Father's Love Begotten as the Communion Hymn, followed by Silent Night as the priest performs the Post-Communion ablutions.

And, as usual, the Recession will be accompanied by Joy to the World.

A Combined-Choir practice is anticipated for the Thursday prior, 21 December, at 6:30pm. I hope to get Roxanne up for one or two of our Tuesday practices, perhaps the 19th, maybe the 12th as well, so we can go over the carols and hymns we'll join in on as well as practice the Introit and Communio with the organ.

Overall, I think this is actually a better line-up than last year.

Line-up for SUN 03 SEP: THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (and Fri 08 Sep: Nativity of Our Lady; plus preview of Sun 10 Sep: 14th Sunday after Pentecost)

Here’s the line-up. We practiced the Thirteenth Sunday on Tuesday night, spending a lot of time on the Introit. I’m linking the practice video and mp3 for that below as well; keep working with it. I think we can do this!

As a heads-up, I’m also including the next-coming Friday, 08 September: Nativity of Our Lady, as well as the practice video and mp3 for the Introit of the Fourteenth Sunday as well, under the assumption we’re going to continue with these. We can do this! Just try to listen to it, pre-practice it a bit before we practice on Tuesday … I think it helped last Tuesday night.

For Sun 03 Sep: Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
      • Mass Propers [PDF]
      • Mass Parts: Mass VIII -- De Angelis
      • After Offertory: Psalm 140 Incensum [PDF]

        • This will be our hymn for the month of September, in celebration of the Triumph of the Cross (Feast: 14 Sep)
      • Postlude: Antiphona ad Sanctum Michaelum [PDFmp3]
Daily Mass feast celebrated with chant this coming week:

Fri 08 Sep: Nativity of Our Lady
For Sun 10 Sep: Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

      Monday, August 21, 2017

Line-up for SUN 27 AUG: TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (and Tue 22 Aug: Queenship of Mary; Thu 24 Aug: St. Bartholomew)

Here's the line-up for practice tomorrow night, back at our regular time in our regular place:

For Sun 27 Aug: Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

      • Mass Propers [PDF]
        • Note that I am changing the Alleluia slightly to match the style we used with Tommy at the St. Philomena Mass a couple of weeks ago.
        • I'm also leaving out the extended Psalm-verses for incensation. I'll try pacing the Introit and the Offertory better, beginning the Kyrie when the incensation begins during the opening rites and reserving extra music for the chanting of Psalm 140 when incensation begins afteer the Offertory.
      • Mass Parts: Mass VIII De Angelis [see at right]
      • Psalm 140 Incensum [PDF]
      • After Communion: Salve Regina [PDF -- Youtube]
      • Postlude: Antiphona ad Sanctum Michaelem [PDF -- mp3]

Daily Mass feasts celebrated with chant this week are:

Tue 22 Aug: Queenship of Mary

      • Line-up [PDF]
      • Of course, 6:30am Mass is before our 5:30pm practice. I put up an announcement on Facebook a while ago.

      Thu 24 Aug: St.  Bartholomew

      • Line-up [PDF]

Finally, we'll start looking at the Post-Communion hymn for the month of September, the Month of the Holy Cross: Vexilla Regis Prodeunt [PDF -- Youtube]

Line-up for Sun 20 Aug: 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A

With Fr. Blake leaving on vacation today, there was quite a bit of uncertainty what the 5pm Mass on this coming Sunday would be -- TLM or Novus Ordo. On the other hand, with Tuesday being a Holy Day of Obligation with a 6pm Mass (covered by another choir since the Schola covered the 6:30am Mass), our practice was delayed until tonight. Things worked out at the last minute, however, with news that the Mass will be said by Fr. Seiler as a Novus Ordo -- but predominately in Latin much like Fr. Blake did for the month of July 2016, immediately after his appointment to the Basilica, when he was still working on learning the TLM well enough to say it with appropriate dignity. Ultimately, the difference in language between the "English Mass" and the Traditional Latin Mass is the least of the differences, it seems! In any case, I had just enough time before practice began to clear the core of the following line-up with him....

      • Mass Propers in Latin (Introit, Offertory, and Communion Antiphon) [PDF]
      • Responsorial Psalm and Gospel Acclamation in English [PDF]
      • Mass Parts: Mass VIII De Angelis [as at right, including Gloria and Credo III]
      • Incensation Psalm 140 [PDF]
      • Post-Communion: Salve Regina [PDF -- Youtube]
      • Postlude: Antiphona ad Sanctum Michaelem [PDF -- mp3]

I really haven't looked ahead to next week, but presumably Fr. Blake will be back with the TLM for the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost.

In the meantime, come Tuesday night we will be back to our normal night for practice, and we will go over the upcoming week's daily-Mass feast day, St. Bartholomew on Thursday the 24th.

      Monday, August 07, 2017

Line-up for SUN 13 AUG: TENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (plus Thu 10 Aug St. Lawrence, Fri 11 Aug St. Philomena, and Tue 15 Aug Assumption)

Here’s what I’m planning on us practicing tomorrow night …

      Sun 13 Aug: Tenth Sunday:
      • Mass Propers, including extra verses for the Introit and the Offertory [PDF]
      • Mass Parts: Mass VIII De Angelis [see at right]
      • Incensation Psalm 140 REVISED [PDF] – I’ve changed the termination
      • Post-Communion: Salve Regina [PDFYoutube]
      Also…

      • Thu 10 Aug – 6:30 am Feast of St. Lawrence [gdoc]
      • Fri 11 Aug – 6pm at St. Frances Cabrini Church in Alexandria – See last week for Propers
        • Tommy is planning to be here tomorrow night to practice with us. He’s also bringing a hymn to St Philomena that Fr. Partain has requested for a prelude.
        • Let’s bring our robes with us Friday night.

      • Tue 15 Aug – 6:30 am Feast of the Assumption – Holy Day of Obligation [gdoc]
        • We will not be doing double-duty for this feast. The 9am choir will be handling the 6pm Mass in the evening … which of course means we will not be able to practice at 5:30pm per usual. We’ll talk about an alternate time.

      Tuesday, August 01, 2017

Line-up for Sun 06 Aug: Feast of the Transfiguration (plus Sat 05 Aug St. Mary Major and Fri 11 Aug St. Philomena)

First, I apologize for my negligence in posting these line-ups over the past month. I have no good reason to plead, just that I didn't do it one week, then another, then another....

But, not in time for it to be seen before practice earlier this evening but for later reference, here is the line-up for next Sunday -- 06 August, therefore the Feast of the Transfiguration:

      • Mass Propers, including extra verses for the Introit and the Offertory [PDF]
      • Mass Parts: Mass VIII De Angelis [see previous posts]
      • Hymn after Communion: Quicumque Christum [PDF - mp3]
      • I'm also introducing a "Psalm for Incensing" after the Offertory, which we will go over this evening  - Psalm 140 Dirigatur oratio mea sicut incensum [PDF]

Also, please remember that this coming 8am Saturday is another Basilica Feast Day, 05 August, The Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major ("Our Lady of the Snows"):

      • Mass Propers [gdoc]
      • Hymn after Communion: Salve Regina [PDF - Youtube] -- Hang on to it as we will use it after Communion through August starting the 13th.

Finally, on Friday 11 August, we will continue our tradition of going and singing for the special Mass for the Feast of St. Philomena at St. Frances Cabrini Church in Alexandria, 6pm. Here are the propers:

      • Mass Propers
        • Introit through Offertory [PDF]
        • Communio [PDF]
      • Mass Propers (all) [mp3]: Time-stamps --

        • 03:00 Gradual
        • 04:00 Alleluia
        • 05:05 Offertory
