Line-Up for 10 JUNE: EXTERNAL SOLEMNITY OF THE SACRED HEART (plus 08 June Sacred Heart Ordinary Form)

There has been some back-and-forth on this, but apparently the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart does warrant "External" treatment, that is, it can be celebrated on the Sunday. For a good explanation, see this article External Solemnities at New Liturgical Movement [LINK].

Of course, in the Ordinary Form, Sacred Heart is always the Friday after the Second Sunday after Pentecost, so 06:30 Mass on Friday 08 June will have chanted Propers and a hymn.

Sunday 10 June (music sheet order)
  • [Asperges Me]

PREVIEW of Sunday 17 June
  • MASS PROPERS: FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST [LINK]
  • HYMN: COR JESU AMANTISSIMUM [LINK]
    • June being the Month of the Sacred Heart, we will continue with this hymn for this week, and perphaps the next week although 24 June is the Solemnity of the Birth of John the Baptist, which preempts the Sunday and I may find some hymn more specific to the day.

Monday, May 28, 2018

Line-Up for 03 JUNE: EXTERNAL SOLEMNITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI (plus 31 May Visitation)

This is FIRST SUNDAY, so Vespers and TLM will be with Organ. Roxanne should be up there to practice with us on Tuesday evening.

Apparently the transference of Corpus Christi from the Thursday after Trinity Sunday to the next Sunday was something that began before Vatican II, so it is an option that is preserved in the modern Extraordinary Form. This year we are taking the option. There is therefore a long Sequence after the Gradual-Alleluia. I believe it's actually the longest Sequence of any Mass.

In any case, both because of the long Sequence and the fact that this First Sunday slipped up on me (in part because we had not decided whether to go with Corpus Christi or not) and we haven't "pre-practiced" the Full Introit, we're just sticking with the psalm-toned Introit, at least for this month.

Note that Thursday 31 May is the Feast of the Visitation, which we will as usual commemorate at 06:30 Mass by chanting the Propers and a short hymn -- since it's a Marian feast, we'll pull out the chant Ave Maria again.

Finally, I'm not sure about the Asperges. Fr. Blake has expressed a desire to "dial it back" a bit, leave it for special seasons and feasts, but we also mentioned First Sundays. We likely won't know until Sunday, but going forward have it handy even though we may not use it so often.

Monday 21 May -- 06:30 Mass
  • Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church [LINK]
    • This is a brand-new feast, just established in February for the Monday after Pentecost. Even though we normally do not commemorate memorials with chanted propers at Daily Mass, we will this one because we are a "Marian" Basilica, just as we do, e.g., Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of the Rosary.
PREVIEW: Next Week, 20 May
  • Trinity Sunday [LINK] -- NOTE: THIS IS REVISED FROM WHAT I HANDED OUT AT PRACTICE
  • Hymn: O Lux Beata Trinitas [LINK
  • Return to Mass VIII: De Angelis [LINK]
    • As you may remember, my initial plan was to split the time between Easter and Advent evenly with Mass I until midsummer and then going back to Mass VIII. Nevertheless, a couple of congregants expressed a preference for Mass VIII that I found to be wider than expected when I started asking around. The attraction is based mainly on the latter's "singability," i.e., its familiarity. So, although we had gotten a bit bored with it, we've had almost six months away from it and I've decided we can handle going back to it for the next six months.
THANK YOU

... to those who showed up last Wednesday evening to celebrate Vespers for the Vigil of the Ascension in the Extraordinary Form. This is something I hope to become a regular occurrence especially to commemorate those centrally important feasts that the modern calendar lamentably moves from their historical dates to the nearest Sunday in another sad concession to the modern world. Since it is unlikely, for the foreseeable future at least, that we will get Mass itself in the Extraordinary Form on those traditional feast days, Vespers in the Extraordinary Form is the next best thing, whether on the feast itself or on its vigil.

The Feast of the Ascension

In the Traditional Roman Calendar, the celebration of Ascension Thursday does not transfer to the subsequent Sunday, which will be celebrated in the Extraordinary Form as the Sunday Within the Octave of the Ascension. Desiring to commemorate the traditional date of the Feast in the Extraordinary Form in some way, but the Basilica being unavailable on Thursday because of Confirmation, members of the Schola Cantorum will chant the Latin Vespers for the Vigil on the preceding Wednesday evening, 09 May, at 5:30pm.

Changes to Sunday 15 April - and Quick Report on the Roadtrip

It's been a busy week and one of the first things to go is taking time to post things here. But here's a couple of items:

1. 5pm Sunday Mass on 15 April will be Novus Ordo in Latin. Fr. Blake is on vacation next week, and Fr. Seiler is stepping in to allow him to get a jump on his time away. Musically speaking, the Mass Parts and Hymn remain the same; the Propers are, of course, different for the "Third Sunday of Easter, Year B" in the Ordinary Form than for the "Second Sunday after Easter" in the Extraordinary Form. Luckily, I knew about this in just enough time that we could practice correctly on Tuesday night. Here's the sheet for the Introit, Offertory, and Communion Antiphon [LINK]. We'll do the Responsorial and the Alleluia Verse in English -- [LINK].

2. The Road Trip. Last night, Thursday 12 April, a group of us went up and sang for a special Traditional Latin Mass at St. John Berchmans Cathedral in Shreveport, celebrated by Fr. Benedict from Norcia Abbey in Italy. In the Extraordinary Form, the Mass Propers for weekdays are generally the same as the preceding Sunday, so see here [LINK]. The major differences were:

  • No Vidi Aquam
  • No Credo
  • No Antiphona ad Michaelem Archangelum
  • O Filii et Filiae was moved to after the Communion Antiphon

Thanks to the Choir Director at St. John's, Aaron Wilson, and the Organist, Caitlin [I'm sorry, but I didn't catch her last name], as well as the young men from St. Johns who so regularly come down to Natchitoches for our weekly TLM, for making us feel so welcome. Thanks as well to the members of our Schola who made the trip. You're the best!

    • First Alleluia: Cognoverunt Discipuli [Mass Propers]
    • Second Alleluia: Ego sum Pastor Bonus [Mass Propers]

Thank you to those who made it to Mass this morning to help celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation during the 6:30am Mass. Our next weekday feast will be 25 April, St. Mark.

And, did somebody say, "Roadtrip!"? -- After Mass on Sunday, our lads from Shreveport extended an invitation for us to come provide music for the Traditional Latin Mass that Chris had previously announced on the TLM Community Facebook Page for 6pm this coming Thursday 12 April at St. John Berchmans Cathedral in Shreveport, celebrated by Fr. Benedict, OSB, from Norcia, Italy. With maybe a little rearranging (e.g., perhaps O Filii et Filiae at Communion rather than Offertory) and probable omission of the chanted Prayer to St. Michael, everything will be the same as for last night's Mass for the Octave of Easter/Low Sunday/Divine Mercy Sunday/Quasimodo Sunday (did I miss anything?) [LINK]. Right now, Sydney and I are planning on going, with a possibility of Tommy Myrick joining us if his schedule at Cabrini allows. This would be a good thing to do; as you may recall, we owe our choir robes to the generosity of St. John's. So, if you're able, schola members, come join us -- as usual, my SUV will accommodate six passengers. We're tentatively planning on leaving at 4pm. We'll talk about it tomorrow night at practice.

Line-up for 08 APRIL: OCTAVE OF EASTER/LOW SUNDAY/DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY -- plus Monday 09 April, the displaced Feast of the Annunciation

Well, last week when I said hang on to the Easter Sunday music because the next Sunday, being the Octave of Easter, would be exactly the same, I was totally wrong. The Propers are totally different. But, having announced last night (when I was still under that misimpression) that we would not have practice this week, I'm not going back on that. We'll be doing psalm-toned Propers, so we ought to be able to handle them on the fly. Therefore:

Sunday 08 April (music sheet order)

  • Vidi Aquam
  • Mass Propers: LOW SUNDAY [LINK]
    • Introitus: Quasi modo [Mass Propers]
  • Kyrie I Lux et Origo
  • Gloria Lux et Origo
    • Graduale: Alleluia. In Die Resurrectionis [Mass Propers]
    • Alleluia: Post dies octo [Mass Propers]
  • Credo III
    • Offertorio: Angelus Domini [Mass Propers]
  • HYMN: O Filii et Filiae [LINK]: verses 1, 7-12
  • Sanctus I Lux et Origo
  • Agnus Dei I Lux et Origo
    • Communio: Mitte manum tuum [Mass Propers]
  • Antiphona ad S. Michaelem Archangelem
Regarding the just-past Easter Triduum -- THANK YOU to all who showed up at the respective practices and services. I think we acquitted ourselves well. Once again, Thank You to Roxanne for supporting us with the organ yesterday at both Vespers and TLM. Thanks especially to those who came to the unofficial, off-the-record (so to speak) Tenebrae service Good Friday evening. I'm going to fight to get Tenebrae made official and on-the record for next year.

Regarding Divine Mercy Sunday -- As you may have seen in the bulletin, there will be devotions at 3pm on next Sunday, the 8th, "to celebrate the Lord's mercy and compassion. Fr. Blake will lead us in the Divine Mercy Devotions. Then there will be veneration and confession. We will end with the Litany of Divine Mercy and a closing prayer." Included in that will, as I understand it, be chanting the Divine Mercy Chaplet to simple tones. Please try to join us. As far as I know, Vespers will proceed as normal at 4:30.

The Feast of the Annunciation -- Finally, because the Feast of the Annunciation, normally on 25 March, fell on Palm Sunday this year, it was displaced outside Holy Week and the Octave of Easter to the subsequent Monday -- 09 April. Here is the sheet for those who would like to come for 06:30 Mass [LINK]; I will, of course, have copies available for anyone who chooses to join us.

  • HYMN: O Filii et Filiae [LINK]
  • Sanctus I Lux et Origo
  • Agnus Dei I Lux et Origo
  • Antiphona ad S. Michaelem Archangelem
Sunday 08 April
  • This will be easy: Keep your Easter Sunday music for Divine Mercy Sunday. Since it's also the Octave of Easter, everything will be the same, except that in the hymn we will chant the verses appropriate to that Sunday.
Regarding the weekdays within the Octave of Easter at 6:30am Mass. Since each day of an Octave is a feast-day, last year those of us at daily Mass chanted the antiphons and sang a hymn. I have spoken with Fr. Blake, and for various reasons we are not going to do so this year. Our next daily Mass feast day will therefore be Monday 09 April, the Feast of the Annunciation, normally 25 March but displaced this year by Palm Sunday.

Regarding Divine Mercy Sunday, there will be a Divine Mercy Service at 3pm. We are in the process of finalizing what it will entail, but likely will include a very simple English chant of the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Finally, as a reminder, I have permission from Fr. Blake to chant the Vigil of Holy Saturday as a simple, unofficial, not formally announced Tenebrae Service in the Basilica at 8pm on the evening of Good Friday. If I am by myself, that is fine, but I would really prefer not to be by myself. I'm hoping that if we have a decent, even if small, turnout of people that we can get this on the schedule for next year. To quote (really, "adapt") from Wikipedia:

Tenebrae – Latin for “darkness” or “shadows” – is a Christian religious service celebrated during Holy Week within Western Christianity, on the evening before or in the early morning of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and/or Holy Saturday. Tenebrae is distinctive for its gradual extinguishing of candles while a series of readings and psalms are chanted or recited.

The Roman rite of Tenebrae, originally associated with the celebration of various canonical hours of the Divine Office, most typically Matins and Lauds (anticipated), was widely observed in the Catholic Church, especially in monasteries, but with a high attendance by the laity, until liturgical reforms in the second half of the 20th century suppressed the practice. It has begun to reappear in recent years, however, as an extra-liturgical devotional service.

The gradual extinguishing of candles symbolizes the gathering darkness of sin which cannot, ultimately, overcome the Light of Christ. The strepitus or “great noise” near the end simulates the earthquake at the crucifixion, the closing of the tomb, and the tumultuous clash of God with Satan.

Holy Saturday is, in my opinion, the "overlooked" day of the Easter Triduum -- between Good Friday's Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord and Easter Sunday's Resurrection (beginning liturgically, of course, at sundown on Saturday). But the time in between is important as well, when, as the Apostles' Creed says, "[Jesus] descended into Hell," and as 1 Peter 4: 6 puts it, "[he] preached [the Gospel] also to the dead." It is called the "Harrowing of Hell," an ancient homily on which will be the climax of Tenebrae.

Line-up for SUN 04 MAR: THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

This is the First Sunday of the month, so we will have an organist. Unfortunately, Tuesday 27 February is also a Pastoral Council Meeting at 6pm, and I'd like to make it (I've missed the last two since they're always on our practice nights and they've hit right before major celebrations). Fortunately, even though this is a very important practice, I think we can get through the vital parts pretty quickly. We need to start promptly at 5:30, though.

Specifically, we will be doing the full Gregorian Propers for both the Introit and the Communio. Since we've been practicing them for a couple of weeks already, hopefully with Roxanne supporting us on the organ we can polish those off pretty quickly, as difficult as they are. I've carried forward the links for the practice videos, so if you get a chance to go over them a few more times before practice, that would be great.

I think this will be the first time we will have her with us for the Asperges, as well, but if we don't get to that, I'm not worried too much. As to the Mass Parts, they are the same as the First Sunday in February, so if we don't get to practice them with her, ditto. Parce Domine will be a capella; I did give her a modern notation transcription of the St. Michael Prayer, but if we can't practice it with her I'm going to suggest we just do it a capella as usual as well. Finally, we're going to keep sacred silence during Communion once we have chanted the Communio as we go downstairs, receive, and/or take our places at front left.

Here's the line-up, in sheet-order:

Sun 25 Feb: 2nd Sunday in Lent
  • Asperges Me
  • Mass Propers for 3rd Sunday in Lent [LINK]
  • Kyrie XI Orbis Factor
  • Credo III
  • HYMN: Parce Domine
  • Sanctus XI Orbis Factor
  • Agnus Dei XI Orbis Factor
  • Antiphona ad S. Michaelem Archangelem

In other news, you may remember I've talked about adding a fourth Mass Setting to our repertoire. I've made a decision, and hope to start looking at Mass I Lux et Origo, intending to debut it at Easter and use it through July. Here is a [LINK] to the music; if you want to listen to it, you can find videos, audios, etc. on this page [LINK] (and a lot more besides, for all eighteen of the Gregorian Mass Settings; Roxanne, this includes the organ scores).

Line-up for SUN 25 FEB: SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT (plus Chair of St. Peter and 3rd Sunday)

Hi all... I'm changing the format of these posts a bit once again. I'm going back to a more detailed list, this time of the sheets/pieces of music you should have in your folder or binder, in what I consider to be the best order for keeping them straight during Mass. (Obviously, there could always be last-minute changes, but this is the best I can anticipate when I'm putting together material for practice.) To make things a bit quicker and easier on myself in putting together these posts, I'm also going to stop repeating the links here for sheets, audio, and/or video for items (such as the Mass parts and hymns) that are in the lists to right or left of this center column. I'll follow that Sunday list with other items we'll look at during the weekly practice. So, for:

Practice Tues 09 Jan 5:30pm
We will go over the above plus:

Wed 10 Jan: Anniversary of the Elevation of the Minor Basilica
  • 6:30am: Propers and Hymn after Communion [SHEET]
  • 6pm: This will be a bit different. All choirs have been invited to join together. There will be no separate practice because most of the music will be out of the red Worship hymnal. Here is the probable line-up, which may change:
    • Entrance: O God Beyond All Praising (Worship 627)
    • Introit (as at 6:30am above, extended with verses on the back of the sheet)
    • Kyrie (follow the priest, probably the simple one)
    • Gloria: Andrews (Worship 320)
    • Responsorial Psalm (TBD)
    • Alleluia (TBD)
    • Offertory Hymn: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name (Worship 614)
    • Sanctus (follow the priest, probably the simple one)
    • Our Father (follow the priest)
    • Agnus Dei (follow the priest, probably the simple one)
    • Communio (as at 6:30am)
    • Instrumental
    • Hymn after Communion: One Bread, One Body (Worship 931) or The Church's One Foundation (Worship 736)
    • Recessional Hymn: Immaculate Mary (Worship 893)
  • The 6pm Mass will be followed by a Parish Supper provided by the Traditional Latin Mass Community and the St. Vincent De Paul Society

Line-up for SUN 07 JAN: SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY/HOLY FAMILY (and Mon 08 Jan: Prompt Succor)

Well, this has been a week. I cancelled practice Tuesday because the cold and flu season hit me like a brickbat. I'm slowly getting better, but I've decided not to try for an alternate practice this week. Here's a simplified...

Line-up for the Feast of the Holy Family.
We're going minimalist on this. With no practice, we'll default back to just the psalm-toned Mass Parts and the Propers. If we venture a hymn, I'm thinking O Sanctissima from the red Worship hymnal.

Mass Setting for Advent-Epiphanytide: Mass XII Pater Cuncta
Monday is a feast day that is distinct to Louisiana, at least as a solemnity, Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Here's a link to the sheet for 6:30am Mass -- [GDOC]

Wednesday, 10 January, is the eighth anniversary of the dedication of the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Besides, 6:30am, there is also a 6pm Mass. Even though we have backed off on typically pulling double-duty on such feast days, this one is special. For us, it will be a normal Basilican Feast Day in the morning; in the evening, Fr. Blake has requested participation from all of the choirs but a fairly simple hymn line-up. I'll let you all know more details during our practice on Tuesday, 09 January. Remember, there's also a Parish Supper after this Mass.
