Changes to Sunday 15 April - and Quick Report on the Roadtrip

It's been a busy week and one of the first things to go is taking time to post things here. But here's a couple of items:

1. 5pm Sunday Mass on 15 April will be Novus Ordo in Latin. Fr. Blake is on vacation next week, and Fr. Seiler is stepping in to allow him to get a jump on his time away. Musically speaking, the Mass Parts and Hymn remain the same; the Propers are, of course, different for the "Third Sunday of Easter, Year B" in the Ordinary Form than for the "Second Sunday after Easter" in the Extraordinary Form. Luckily, I knew about this in just enough time that we could practice correctly on Tuesday night. Here's the sheet for the Introit, Offertory, and Communion Antiphon [LINK]. We'll do the Responsorial and the Alleluia Verse in English -- [LINK].

2. The Road Trip. Last night, Thursday 12 April, a group of us went up and sang for a special Traditional Latin Mass at St. John Berchmans Cathedral in Shreveport, celebrated by Fr. Benedict from Norcia Abbey in Italy. In the Extraordinary Form, the Mass Propers for weekdays are generally the same as the preceding Sunday, so see here [LINK]. The major differences were:

  • No Vidi Aquam
  • No Credo
  • No Antiphona ad Michaelem Archangelum
  • O Filii et Filiae was moved to after the Communion Antiphon

Thanks to the Choir Director at St. John's, Aaron Wilson, and the Organist, Caitlin [I'm sorry, but I didn't catch her last name], as well as the young men from St. Johns who so regularly come down to Natchitoches for our weekly TLM, for making us feel so welcome. Thanks as well to the members of our Schola who made the trip. You're the best!

Thank you to those who made it to Mass this morning to help celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation during the 6:30am Mass. Our next weekday feast will be 25 April, St. Mark.

And, did somebody say, "Roadtrip!"? -- After Mass on Sunday, our lads from Shreveport extended an invitation for us to come provide music for the Traditional Latin Mass that Chris had previously announced on the TLM Community Facebook Page for 6pm this coming Thursday 12 April at St. John Berchmans Cathedral in Shreveport, celebrated by Fr. Benedict, OSB, from Norcia, Italy. With maybe a little rearranging (e.g., perhaps O Filii et Filiae at Communion rather than Offertory) and probable omission of the chanted Prayer to St. Michael, everything will be the same as for last night's Mass for the Octave of Easter/Low Sunday/Divine Mercy Sunday/Quasimodo Sunday (did I miss anything?) [LINK]. Right now, Sydney and I are planning on going, with a possibility of Tommy Myrick joining us if his schedule at Cabrini allows. This would be a good thing to do; as you may recall, we owe our choir robes to the generosity of St. John's. So, if you're able, schola members, come join us -- as usual, my SUV will accommodate six passengers. We're tentatively planning on leaving at 4pm. We'll talk about it tomorrow night at practice.

Line-up for 08 APRIL: OCTAVE OF EASTER/LOW SUNDAY/DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY -- plus Monday 09 April, the displaced Feast of the Annunciation

Well, last week when I said hang on to the Easter Sunday music because the next Sunday, being the Octave of Easter, would be exactly the same, I was totally wrong. The Propers are totally different. But, having announced last night (when I was still under that misimpression) that we would not have practice this week, I'm not going back on that. We'll be doing psalm-toned Propers, so we ought to be able to handle them on the fly. Therefore:

Sunday 08 April (music sheet order)

  • Vidi Aquam
  • Mass Propers: LOW SUNDAY [LINK]
    • Introitus: Quasi modo [Mass Propers]
  • Kyrie I Lux et Origo
  • Gloria Lux et Origo
    • Graduale: Alleluia. In Die Resurrectionis [Mass Propers]
    • Alleluia: Post dies octo [Mass Propers]
  • Credo III
    • Offertorio: Angelus Domini [Mass Propers]
  • HYMN: O Filii et Filiae [LINK]: verses 1, 7-12
  • Sanctus I Lux et Origo
  • Agnus Dei I Lux et Origo
    • Communio: Mitte manum tuum [Mass Propers]
  • Antiphona ad S. Michaelem Archangelem
Regarding the just-past Easter Triduum -- THANK YOU to all who showed up at the respective practices and services. I think we acquitted ourselves well. Once again, Thank You to Roxanne for supporting us with the organ yesterday at both Vespers and TLM. Thanks especially to those who came to the unofficial, off-the-record (so to speak) Tenebrae service Good Friday evening. I'm going to fight to get Tenebrae made official and on-the record for next year.

Regarding Divine Mercy Sunday -- As you may have seen in the bulletin, there will be devotions at 3pm on next Sunday, the 8th, "to celebrate the Lord's mercy and compassion. Fr. Blake will lead us in the Divine Mercy Devotions. Then there will be veneration and confession. We will end with the Litany of Divine Mercy and a closing prayer." Included in that will, as I understand it, be chanting the Divine Mercy Chaplet to simple tones. Please try to join us. As far as I know, Vespers will proceed as normal at 4:30.

The Feast of the Annunciation -- Finally, because the Feast of the Annunciation, normally on 25 March, fell on Palm Sunday this year, it was displaced outside Holy Week and the Octave of Easter to the subsequent Monday -- 09 April. Here is the sheet for those who would like to come for 06:30 Mass [LINK]; I will, of course, have copies available for anyone who chooses to join us.
